IS THE NX NINTENDO’S LAST CHANCE?

For the last month or so I’ve had a thought in the form of a question that has been circling in my mind ..A thought that if you would have asked me a few years ago I would have considered the question asinine and totally foolish, but now I reluctantly see as a possibility. If Nintendo fails to Captivate with the NX this could prove catastrophic for them as a company.

I remember the predictions (mostly trolling) of Micheal Pachter.. him constantly predicting the demise of Nintendo as a Hardware producing company. Weekly on his show Pach Attack via GameTrailers Pachter called for Nintendo to become a 3rd Party developer, developing their IP’S for Sony and Microsoft. To add insult to injury even with the successful run of the Wii his verbiage never changed he just wouldn’t let it go. In his mind Nintendo no longer had a place amongst the hardcore/core gamers and was only satisfying the Nostalgia of a small unwavering group of Nintendo fans …Now that GameTrailers has beating Nintendo to the punch …close their doors as of this year I wonder why Michael Pachter didn’t see their demise ..but let’s stay on topic!!

For all the success of the original Wii ..the WiiU in 3yrs has totally destroyed and with the Wii itself ending lacklusteredly I’m not sure how Nintendo could come back if the NX like the WiiU fail to catch fire… Nintendo needs to hit a home run with the NX …there is no room for anything less. On a good note the hype and interest for the NX is at a level I haven’t seen since the N64 or the original Wii but the fact the the intrigue is so high only makes not hitting a home run even more devastating.

Just look at how the supposed leaked NX controller quickly spread like wide fire …look at how the Hype turned to harsh criticism like people were just waiting for something underwhelming to write Nintendo off again …YouTube was buzzing with disgust & anger videos and this was just a rumor so imagine what that would have been if the leaked controller was authentic. It just strengthens my argument that Nintendo is walking on a cracking glass floor. Hardcore fans, causal fans and non-fans alike are at a breaking point with Nintendo. The WiiU only cements the lack of tolerance for subpar offerings from Nintendo pertaining to the hardware.

Now I know what you’re thinking and what you’re going to say …”LeveledHead Nintendo has vaults full of cash” and guess what.. you’re right!! So no Nintendo isn’t going to go broke any time soon, but money isn’t the problem. Yes Nintendo can financially sustain another bust easily, but can they sustain another bust as far as brand appeal goes? See this is were the problem lies, Nintendo can not continue to lose their appeal in the market place. Mindshare is were Nintendo is standing in sinking sand… Nintendo isn’t popular amongst the gaming majority. Nintendo isn’t as respected in the gaming industry as it once was and there are kinks in the armor. As iconic as Mario is Nintendo has to give him something to work with …. And some new players to hit the court with. Splatoon is a breath of fresh air, but Nintendo needs to give us more of that!! New IP’S with New characters creating new experiences.

The Nintendo NX needs to be on par and honestly more powerful then both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4… Nintendo has to complete for our dollars and complete for mindshare. They have to make themselves relevant to modern millennial gamers… who view Mario like many of us view Disco & bell bottoms… it was something our parents thought was cool. I know that’s a bit harsh, but it’s just the truth and the numbers don’t lie. This current generation of gamers could careless about Nintendo and their legacy… so Nintendo closing their doors wouldn’t bother them one bit and that within itself should worry Nintendo.

So no Nintendo is not in a position to play games… this could very well be the last shot at getting any true relevance since the N64 and that was 3 generations ago. The Wii was something special but it did little to change the Gaming Industry opinions of Nintendo… good for kids, but not good enough for me.

So I’m holding out hope that Nintendo will delivers with the NX ..Now maybe it’s the Fan in me but I truly believe they will!!

  • In terms of being viable as a home console manufacturer, yes this is Nintendo's last chance. Nintendo right now looks like that 56 year-old chick still in the club every Saturday night.

They have not shown the ability or interest to adapt to modern advances in gaming technology and most of that has to do with pride and arrogance. Instead of taking things others have done and making it better like they used to do, they try to go out on left field and make something completely different just for the sake of being different whether it is a sound investment or not. Nobody asked for stuff like Amiibo and Miitomo. They are just stuck in their own world and refuse to come out of it.

They've become too childish for me. That last Nintendo Direct was enough for me.

*in Ced The Entertainer's voice* I'm a grown a$$ man dawg. I don't have time for this kiddie crap from Nintendo. The Mario generation grew up. It's time they did the same.

Nintendo screwed up by naming the console after the wii the WiiU.
    Wtf were they thinking?

  • First of all, success is not based on sales. Microsoft sold over 80M consoles last gen and did not make any money overall. Neither did Sony. Both companies despite their sales have billions of dollars of debt.

Secondly, Nintendo plans its finances around its loyal core audience…the true Nintendo fans. Thats why they focus on familiar franchises. They know the fans of those franchises will be satisfied one way or another in most cases. The budget of almost all their games is designed and planned in such a way that they generate profit with only 100K-500K units sold. So imagine a game like Splatoon and MK8…both of which cost only a fraction of what 3rd parties are spending, but making Nintendo loads of money.

3rd, the Wii U was profitable at launch when sold with one game. It was profitable as a standalone console a few months after launch. So Nintendo is making money with every console and game sold. Every console manufacturer is selling less consoles with each passing generation. The PS4 will not outsell the PS3 and the Xbox One will not outsell the Xbox 360. The Wii U will not outsell the Wii. The 3DS will not outsell the DS. Its known as the law of diminishing returns. As the market becomes more saturated with tech, consoles, and competition, sales will suffer. However, Nintendo has so much loose cash in the bank that they could make console flops for another 50 years before going broke. Lets not count the money they are making now with amiibo among other things.

Nintendo does not need to impress with the NX. They plan for the long haul. As long as the core fans buy the consone (which most will), they will be okay. In short, judge a company by their financials, not the cool factor. PS4 is cool, but broke as hell.

  • Success is measured in net profit (meaning money you can take to the bank.) They don't structure their business around their "loyal fanbase." They structure it the way the board of directors and their investors tell them to. Your analogy is flawed and incorrect. The Wii U sold at a loss at launch and didn't turn a profit until 2014.

    http://gimmegimmegames.com/2014/05/nintendo-wii-u-longer-sold-loss/

The PS4 sold at a profit of $18-20 dollars at launch.

    http://ps4daily.com/2013/11/playstation-4-cost-to-build/

It was the 3DS and Amiibo that helped Nintendo get back in the black. Not the Wii U. By the way, the 3DS sold at a loss as well at the beginning.

The vast majority money lost by Sony was by and large from their other divisions. This generation has been all profit in the gaming division by Sony.

Furthermore, you don't know how many PS4s will sell or how long the PS4 will be on the market. In 2 calendar years and 4 months the PS4 has sold 38 million units. That's nearly HALF the total install base of the PS3 and that number is inflated because of repurchases of bricked consoles such as the number of the 360. SO if you takes away replacements sales, it probably more than half in just 2 years.

2 years. 38 million consoles sold. We haven't even seen the major 1st party titles from Sony yet. The console averages 250,000 consoles sales per month. That's at least 3 million per year counting the major increases all console get in the holiday season. Do you realize that in just the months of November and December the PS4 sold 7.5 million consoles with NO GAMES as fanboys love to say. Right now the PS4 is on pace to not only easily outsell the PS3, but get into the PS2 range. These are facts that can't be denied. 38 million consoles sold all net-profit.

As far as Microsoft goes, they haven't sold any console at a profit, but when your market cap is 410 billion dollars, who cares?

At one point Nintendo had 18 billion dollars cash in the bank. Now because of several years of operating losses that number is down to 4. So the idea of Nintendo being able to sustain itself for 50 years is incorrect.

Your information is very one-sided and out of date. Sony is an entertainment conglomeration. Microsoft is a multimedia conglomeration.

If the XBOX brand dies or the PlayStation brand dies, they can do other things. If Nintendo gaming brand dies, the have nothing else. If Nintendo foolishly thought like you do, they would have been pt of business years ago. The reason why Iwata was looking into the Quality Of Life program and got the ball rolling in mobile because he knew that Nintendo profits in gaming alone will not be sustainable in the long haul because of the reputation the company has now. They need to have other avenues of revenue. THAT is what smart business looks like. Not appeasing fanboys that can get fed bolonga and believe it's prime rib just because it has a Nintendo logo on it.

NX does need to succeed and it will not succeed unless Nintendo grows up. Little kids don't think Nintendo is cool. They didn't grow up wit Mario. Grown ups that used to love Nintendo as kids don't think Nintendo is cool. The only people left as the blind fanboys and that will not sustain a multi-billion dollar company.

  • Nobody asked for Amiibo or Miitomo, yet they became runaway successes. I understand keeping consumers happy, but at the same time, just because we didn't asked for it, doesn't always mean it's a bad idea.

Also, while I understand having more adult content on the side for variety sake, you sound like you're too old for games with color or whimsy, that's the kind of petty and childish argument that when you think about it, really makes no sense.

I will give you this though, they have done as verympoor job at adapting to modern standards in the past, but hopefully the NX changes that.

  • According to the current situation, Nintendo NX will give more attention to other third-party game developers will. This is not a easy thing.
