Well Dualpixels is at it again. According to reports from Geno (who has leaked a lot of information regarding NX) has stated that there is a Luigi’s Mansion 3 in development for Nintendo’s next-generation console code-named “NX.”
Here is a direct quote regarding the matter.
“Luigi’s Mansion 3 is planned to be Nintendo’s impressive visual launch title. The goal I’ve been told, was when the team at Next Level and EAD Tokyo 2 saw the American commercial for Luigi’s Mansion 2 (aka Dark Moon) their goal was to create something that visually stunning for NX and according to sources they have come “damn close to it” with one saying “it’s going to cause arguments on the internet whether it’s bullsh*t or not despite us developers knowing you can achieve something like this on the current hardware specs”. The game uses a lot of advance lighting techniques to create this “living 3d cartoon movie” look with insanely detailed shadows and transparencies. It also shows off the haptic analog sticks, which will resist when trying to capture ghosts. An AR multiplayer mode is also planned to be in the final version of the game.”
Now, here is the American commercial for Luigi’s Mansion 2 spoke about.
So in layman’s terms this report is saying that Luigi’s Mansion 3 will be PiXAR-level graphics. Now like he said, most people will call shenanigans if this game is indeed in development simply because it’s Nintendo. I keep it 100%. That’s what people do. However I don’t think it will be an issue at all.
When I think of the innovation of Super Mario Galaxy and how well that game holds up graphically to this day despite being a Wii game I certainly think Nintendo can pull it off. Then you look at the graphics of Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Toad’s Treasure Tracker, and Yoshi’s Woolly World they’ve been inching ever closer to the PiXAR-level mark.
Then you look at Ratchet And Clank for the PS4 and you already see PiXAR-level graphics achieved on a console with 4-5 year old hardware. So anyone saying this is not possible with NEXT-GEN hardware in my opinion is woefully misinformed. The real question is whether or not this rumor is true. It has been suggested that Nintendo at one point had plans to port Luigi’s Mansion 2: Dark Moon to the Wii U. However with the Wii U about to be put out to pasture, it would be pretty disadvantageous to put a game of that magnitude on a dying console.
I remember hearing Shigeru Miyamoto saying that the next major Mario game would be on the next console and would be going in a different direction. With Miyamoto busy with many other projects (such as finishing up StarFox Zero and possibly Pikmin 4) it would be unlikely we will see a Mario title at launch of NX. There may be a Mario title in development, but I seriously doubt it could be ready that fast. So having a Luigi’s Mansion would be a good stand-in and give Mario a DESPERATELY NEEDED VACATION!!! For goodness sakes! Let the brother catch some R&R!!!
Seriously though, Nintendo has milked Mario long enough. It is time for a break. Give people a chance to miss Mario. That will make the next installment all the more grandiose. I think NX owners will be just fine. Zelda, Smash 4 (port,) Pikmin,4, Luigi’s Mansion 3, that’s good enough firepower for the launch window I think.
The part I find interesting is the possible AR (Augmented Reality) and haptic feedback functionality. This also gives some clues about the possible design of the NX. It is possible that this game could be the “killer-app” that shows the uniqueness of NX and the reason why a consumer should pick up this console.
Personally I think you have to have those types of games when you launch a console. Super Mario 64 showed off analog controls in a way no one had explored before. Halo: Combat Evolved showcased the strengths of the XBOX console regarding online multiplayer. Wii Sports LITERALLY sold the Wii like hotcakes to lumberjacks and became the second best-selling game of all time. I do however think that you have to be deliberate about it. You cannot have a cavalier attitude such as what Nintendo did with NintendoLand regarding the Wii U. You can’t just have a plate full of appetizers when you launch a console and expect that to do the trick. It needs to be a down-home, full-course meal that somebody Grandmama got off her chair and made a meal so good you want to slap somebody! I think that if the rumors are true Luigi’s Mansion 3 can do that. Even if it doesn’t, it will have enough company that will fill in the blanks.
