I have no idea what this is about. Many people assume that Nintendo is finally ready to unveil the NX. Well, that’s possible. One would think that Nintendo would do that here in the states, but I guess it really doesn’t matter where they talk about it. Everyone expected them to do something last week at TGS. I was never on that bandwagon.
A little birdie told me that the non-disclosure agreements regarding the NX dissolve today. I’m not sure what that means officially, but I would take that to mean that anyone with first-hand knowledge of the NX is legally able to talk about it.
Case in point, the President of The Pok’e’mon Company Tsunekazu Ishihara stated today that there will be Pok’e’mon games coming to the NX, which is quite huge. Especially if the NX is more of a portable-hybrid. He also stated that the NX will change the conventions of what we perceive to be home console and portable gaming. Here are his exact words.
“The NX is trying to change the concept of what it means to be a home console device or a hand-held device. We will make games for the NX”
TPC President Tsunekazu Ishihara
So it stands to reason that if NDA’s have expired that the floodgates will open in terms of ACTUAL information about the NX and Nintendo needs to get out ahead of that. So if NDAs have indeed expired they don’t have long before the cat is out of the bag. This guy Ishihara may have already let the horse out of the barn. His comments don’t confirm the Eurogamer article, but it definitely gives it a strong argument. His comments still could be used to describe any type of device or devices.
It could be a portable that docks to a station for TV play. It could be a home console where the controller becomes a self-contained portable unit (which basically would be what the Wii U should have been.) It could be a home console and a hand-held console running the same platform OS. It could be a hand-held console and home console of a certain power level, but can fuse together to become a super console (remember the first rumored codename of the NX was Nintendo “Fusion.”) Who knows what it is? Whatever it is, I don’t think we have to wait much longer.
We’ll see if something happens this week with Nintendo. It’s time. Let’s get this over with. No matter the NX is, the prevailing conversation is not going to be what the NX is, but rather going to be focused on what the NX is NOT. Nintendo is to blame for most of that because of the long period of secrecy. Some of it will be our own faults as well. I won’t be surprised if the NX is disappointing and I will be surprised if it is impressive. Even if it is the weakest, lamest, and most unimpressive incarnation it can be, if it has games I want to play I’ll at least pick it up if the Lord says the same. Got to at least give it a chance.
This could be it, or it could just be yet another lame-fest by Nintendo talking about things no one cares about right now like new Amiibos. This is the same company that showed up at the VGX Awards to announce frigging Cranky Kong for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for crying out loud. They could also be announcing a price cut to the Wii U. Again, who cares? You have no new games to entice people to buy it. I hope this is finally the reveal of the NX, but I’m not holding my breath.
