This Week’s Anime: Re:Zero-Starting Life In Another World

This week’s anime is going to be a weekly post that I will start covering what anime I watched that week.  For the most part it will be one anime series a week unless I feel the need to post more than one. Seeing as I watch anime everyday I thought it would be a good idea to share what I watched that week and give brief thoughts on it. This week’s anime is Re:Zero-Starting Life In Another World.

Re:Zero-Starting Life In Another World follows Natsuki Subaru who is a regular high school student who after getting a snack from a gas station blacks out and wakes up in another world. Being a video game player he thinks he is playing out one of his hero fantasies and tries to embark on a heroic quest.. He is soon cornered in an ally by three thugs and he quickly realizes that he bit off more than he could chew. He winds up being saved by this silvered haired girl who he decides he is going to repay by any means necessary. This will eventually get him and the girl killed and he finds he wakes up in the same place he woke up when he first came to this world. With his memory intact he decides to do things a little differently but ends up getting killed again only to wake up in the same place. Each time he gets killed everything resets but his memory of what happened each time before he died. Why was he brought to this world, who brought him to this world, how does he keep reviving and why is he compelled to help this strange girl? These are the questions you will ask and try to figure out as you watch this anime.

At first I thought this anime was kind of silly and thought it would be boring but I stuck to my rule of letting things flesh out before deciding if i would call it quits on it. I am pleased that I gave it a shot as it has become one of my new favorite anime. Re: Zero gets deep as time goes on and it will have you pulling on emotional strings. You get attached to these characters as you learn more about them. You feel for Natsuki as you start to see how things are affecting him. It also brings to question what would you do if you were in his shoes? How would you take repeatedly dieing and remembering each death? You also have to pay close attention as you watch because each character plays an integral part in figuring out the mystery of what is going on. Each time he dies and comes back there is a clue in either something someone said or did that will play a part in a bigger scene. While I think I have the pieces to the puzzle mapped out I have a feeling I am about to be set up for a mind blow. That’s what makes this anime so good is the trying to figure it out part while getting attached to the characters. I recommend you give this anime a try.
